Lisa Maxwell is the author of the saga “The Last Magician” and the novel Unhooked. Raised in Ohio, she has a doctorate in English Literature; has worked as a teacher, researcher, bookseller, editor and writer. She teaches at her hometown college in Virginia.

I'm very curious to ask you if there was a specific moment between the folds of time when you realized that you wanted to be a writer.

I maybe thought about being a writer when I was a teenager, but it wasn’t something I seriously considered until much later. It wasn’t until I was about 30 that I really decided to try writing for publication. At the time, there was a recession (2009) and I couldn’t find a job with my degree. I was staying home and watching my two very young children, and I was also reading a lot of YA and romance at the time. That’s what made me want to try.

Forse ho pensato di fare lo scrittore quando ero un adolescente, ma non è stato qualcosa che ho preso seriamente in considerazione fino a molto più tardi. Solo verso i 30 anni ho deciso di provare a scrivere per la pubblicazione.

adjectives to describe you, what would you use?

Driven, loyal, stubborn

When and how did the inspiration for "The Last Magician" come about?

I’m not really sure? It was a pretty long process of development. I wanted to write a story about a thief who could see in “bullet time” (like the Matrix movies), but it took a few years to realize that what I was really writing was a time-travel/historical fiction piece.

n ladro in grado di vedere nel “bullet time” (come nei film di Matrix), ma ci sono voluti alcuni anni

per capire che quello che stavo scrivendo in realtà era un'opera di time-travel/storia.

Which of your characters most reflects you?

Viola, without a doubt. They’re all a little bit me, but Viola with all of her stabby-ness is definitely my favorite. Not that I would ever really stab anyone. Probably.

Quale dei tuoi personaggi ti rispecchia di più?

Viola, senza dubbio. Sono tutti un po' me stessi, ma Viola, con tutta la sua pugnalosità, è sicuramente la mia preferita.

Esta has this incredible ability to move between the folds of time, how come you chose early 20th century New York?

I knew I wanted her to have to steal the key to something—at first I thought she’d be a map thief. But I needed a location where they could be trapped, like an island of some sort. I was watching Newsies with my kids—a movie I grew up with and loved—and realized that Old New York made a lot of sense. 

Esta ha questa incredibile capacità di muoversi tra le pieghe del tempo,

come mai ha scelto la New York dei primi del Novecento?

Sapevo che volevo che dovesse rubare la chiave di qualcosa - all'inizio pensavo che sarebbe stata una ladra di mappe.

Ma avevo bisogno di un luogo in cui potessero essere intrappolati, come una specie di isola. Stavo guardando Newsies

con i miei figli, un film con cui sono cresciuta e che ho amato, e mi sono resa conto che la vecchia New York aveva molto senso.

What was the most complex aspect of creating your world building?

The time travel. My husband told me not to do it, and he was probably right. Time travel is incredibly hard—everything could be a paradox that unravels all of the world building. It took a long time and many, many charts to get something that was nuanced but also clear.

Qual è stato l'aspetto più complesso della creazione del suo mondo?

Il viaggio nel tempo. Mio marito mi ha detto di non farlo, e probabilmente aveva ragione. Il viaggio nel tempo è incredibilmente difficile: ogni cosa potrebbe essere un paradosso che svela tutta la costruzione del mondo. Ci sono voluti molto tempo e molti, molti grafici per ottenere qualcosa che fosse sfumato ma anche chiaro.

Have you ever written a scene that surprised you while creating it? If yes, can you tell us about it? (Consider that only the first volume has been released in Italy,

please don't spoil anything for us!)

There is a scene with Harte and Esta later in the book—it’s kind of a big moment for them. I wrote the dialog for that scene almost verbatim WAY before I even really knew the characters, but when I actually put it into the book, I realized I had their roles flipped. I was basically writing up to that scene in terms of their story arc, but by the time I got there, I had to switch who said what. That was a surprise.

Hai mai scritto una scena che ti ha sorpresa mentre la creavi? Se sì, ce la puoi raccontare?

(Considerate che in Italia è uscito solo il primo volume, per favore non ci spoilerare nulla).

C'è una scena con Harte ed Esta più avanti nel libro: è una specie di momento importante per loro. Ho scritto i dialoghi di

quella scena quasi alla lettera, MOLTO prima di conoscere davvero i personaggi, ma quando li ho inseriti nel libro, mi sono resa

conto di aver invertito i loro ruoli. In pratica stavo scrivendo fino a quella scena in termini di arco narrativo, ma quando

sono arrivata a quel punto, ho dovuto invertire chi diceva cosa. È stata una sorpresa.

What do you do when you are not writing? Do you have hobbies or passions

that actively influence your works?

I love cooking, and I love going to see live music, but I’m a full-time professor with two kids, so I don’t have a ton of extra time. The writing is kind of my hobby/passion, and I’m lucky enough to get to publish what I work on!

Cosa fai quando non scrivi? Hai hobby o passioni che che influenzano attivamente le tue opere?

Mi piace cucinare e andare a vedere la musica dal vivo, ma sono una professoressa a tempo pieno con due figli, quindi non ho molto tempo libero. La scrittura è un po' il mio hobby/passione, e sono abbastanza fortunata da riuscire a pubblicare ciò su cui lavoro!

I don't know if you've had a chance to notice but in Sterne House the last question in terribly repetitive: what is your favourite book?

That’s a hard one! It’s like picking my favorite child—depends on the day. haha. I’m not sure that I have a favorite, but the last book I read that I really loved is Flavia Brunetti’s The Web of Time. It’s out May 20th. The book is in English, but she’s an Italian author and her writing is just gorgeous. :)

È difficile! È come scegliere il mio bambino preferito: dipende dalla giornata. Non sono sicura di avere un libro preferito, ma l'ultimo che ho letto e che mi è piaciuto molto è La tela del tempo di Flavia Brunetti. È uscito il 20 maggio. Il libro è in inglese, ma lei è un'autrice italiana e la sua scrittura è semplicemente meravigliosa.)
