Mini Intervista a L.J. Hayward

L.J. Hayward has been telling stories for most of her life, a good deal of them of the tall variety. She lives at the beach in Australia but doesn’t surf, though the idea of a houseboat is tempting. While she loves reading and writing, there doesn’t seem to be enough time between working for dollars in a dungeon laboratory, buying plants only to watch them die, and wrangling her housemate, Tilly, a subspecies of Felis catus demonicus, otherwise known as Tilly the Terror, Till-osaurus rex, and Princess Tilly Fluffybum.

L.J. Hayward ha trascorso gran parte della sua vita raccontando storie, molte delle quali piuttosto fantasiose. Let’s start from the beginning: how did your passion for writing start, and when did you realize you wanted to become an author?

My desire to be a writer began in my teenage years, though I did write and illustrate a short book when I was about five. It was about going to the moon and finding a big puddle of blood, so my characters smartly left before they could find out what happened. It was hand-written and stapler bound by my granny. 😉After a break of about a decade I began writing my own, highly derivative epic fantasy when the books I was reading didn’t go the way I wanted them too. Many, many years and some honest criticism later, I started to write original stories.

Partiamo dall'inizio: come è nata la tua passione per la scrittura e quando hai capito che volevi diventare una scrittrice?

Il mio desiderio di diventare una scrittrice è nato durante l'adolescenza, anche se avevo già scritto e illustrato un breve libro quando avevo circa cinque anni. Parlava di un viaggio sulla luna e del ritrovamento di una grande pozza di sangue, quindi i miei personaggi se ne andarono intelligentemente prima di poter scoprire cosa fosse successo. Era scritto a mano e rilegato con una cucitrice da mia nonna. 😉 Dopo una pausa di circa un decennio, ho iniziato a scrivere il mio personale high fantasy fortemente derivato da quando i libri che leggevo non andavano nella direzione che volevo. Molti, molti anni e alcune critiche sincere dopo, ho iniziato a scrivere storie originali.

The Death and the Devil series has captivated many readers with its mix of action, romantic tension and queer representation. I read the first volume brought to italy by triskell edizioni and loved it all. How did the character of Ethan Blade come about?

Ethan Blade was a tricky character to envision when I began writing. He’s a cold-blooded killer but he needed some redeeming traits to make it believable that someone could not only like him but develop deeper feelings for. This requirement basically told me what his history was, something that explained how this very accomplished assassin could also show hints of innocence and sweetness. An interesting thing about developing Ethan was that the name Ethan Blade was originally a place holder. I kept telling myself I would find something more intimidating, worthy of an assassin. In the end, the character simply became Ethan Blade and there was no changing it. Which is good because that name become much more meaningful in the later books.

La serie Death and the Devil ha affascinato molti lettori con il suo mix di azione, tensione romantica e rappresentazione queer.

Ho letto il primo volume pubblicato in Italia da Triskell Edizioni e l'ho adorato. Come è nato il personaggio di Ethan Blade?

Ethan Blade era un personaggio difficile da immaginare quando ho iniziato a scrivere. È un killer spietato, ma aveva bisogno di alcuni tratti redentori per rendere credibile il fatto che qualcuno potesse non solo apprezzarlo, ma anche provare sentimenti più profondi per lui. Questo requisito mi ha praticamente suggerito quale fosse la sua storia, qualcosa che spiegasse come questo assassino di grande successo potesse anche mostrare segni di innocenza e dolcezza. Una cosa interessante sullo sviluppo di Ethan è che il nome Ethan Blade era originariamente un nome provvisorio. Continuavo a ripetermi che avrei trovato qualcosa di più intimidatorio, degno di un assassino. Alla fine, il personaggio è diventato semplicemente Ethan Blade e non c'è stato modo di cambiarlo. Il che è un bene, perché quel nome è diventato molto più significativo nei libri successivi.

One of the strengths of your novels is the balance between thriller and romantic suspense. How do you work to maintain this equilibrium in your storytelling?

I’m the sort of writer called a pantser, meaning I don’t plot out my stories before starting to write. As such, I don’t plan out the spread of action or emotional/romantic scenes. I start with an opening scene, a very vague idea of where the story goes, and everything develops naturally. Each event is inspired by the one that just happened. In other words, it’s all instinctual.

Uno dei punti di forza dei tuoi romanzi è l'equilibrio tra thriller e suspense romantica. Come riesci a mantenere questo equilibrio nella tua narrazione?

Sono il tipo di scrittore che viene definito “pantser”, ovvero non pianifico le mie storie prima di iniziare a scrivere. Di conseguenza, non pianifico lo svolgimento dell'azione o le scene emotive/romantiche. Parto da una scena iniziale, con un'idea molto vaga di dove andrà a parare la storia, e tutto si sviluppa in modo naturale. Ogni evento è ispirato da quello che è appena accaduto. In altre parole, è tutto istintivo.

Your protagonists are often queer but operate in traditionally “masculine” and dangerous settings (like espionage or military action). How important is representation in these contexts for you?

Of course, all representation is important and being queer is not a one size fits all. The MM genre is amazing in that it covers all types of people and personalities and helps dispel a lot of the stereotypical views about being queer. Why I chose to write “traditionally masculine” characters in action situations is largely because that’s the story I was writing. The characters themselves grew into those roles as the story evolved and their personal lives developed.

I tuoi protagonisti sono spesso queer, ma operano in contesti tradizionalmente “maschili” e pericolosi (come lo spionaggio o l'azione militare).

Quanto è importante per te la rappresentazione in questi contesti?

Naturalmente, ogni rappresentazione è importante e l'essere queer non è un concetto unico e universale. Il genere MM è straordinario in quanto copre tutti i tipi di persone e personalità e contribuisce a sfatare molti stereotipi sull'essere queer. Il motivo per cui ho scelto di scrivere personaggi “tradizionalmente maschili” in situazioni d'azione è in gran parte perché questa era la storia che stavo scrivendo. I personaggi stessi sono cresciuti in quei ruoli man mano che la storia si evolveva e le loro vite personali si sviluppavano.

What inspires you the most when starting a new story – characters, themes, or specific scenes?

All of the above? LOL Seriously though, every writer will either say that inspiration is so ephemeral they can’t pin it down, or it comes from a multitude of sources. For Where Death Meets the Devil I had a vague idea of writing a MM action suspense set in Australia (something I hadn’t really read at that point) and an opening scene came to me. A man tied to a chair in the middle of the desert. So I wrote that scene and the rest just followed. Other stories I’ve written it’s a particular character type (Hawkeye from MASH or a cancer survivor), or it’s fulling a hole I perceive in a genre (urban fantasy), or a myriad of sources.

Cosa ti ispira di più quando inizi una nuova storia: i personaggi, i temi o scene specifiche?

Tutto quanto? LOL Scherzi a parte, ogni scrittore direbbe che l'ispirazione è così effimera da non poterla definire con precisione,

oppure che proviene da una moltitudine di fonti. Per "Dove la Morte incontra il Diavolo" avevo una vaga idea di scrivere un thriller d'azione MM

ambientato in Australia (un genere che fino a quel momento non avevo mai letto) e mi è venuta in mente una scena iniziale. Un uomo legato a una

sedia in mezzo al deserto. Così ho scritto quella scena e il resto è venuto da sé. Altre storie che ho scritto sono incentrate su un particolare

tipo di personaggio (Hawkeye di MASH o un sopravvissuto al cancro), oppure colmano una lacuna che percepisco in un genere

(urban fantasy), oppure provengono da una miriade di fonti.

I always enjoy getting to know authors a bit more—what does a typical day in your life look like when you’re in the middle of writing a novel?

I’m currently experiencing the world’s longest writer’s block so I’m not writing right now. When I was writing it was always squeezed in around working full time and family/friends commitments. Some days I’d write a sentence or two, some I managed ten thousand words (one 80,000 word book was written in a month!) and others I wouldn’t write at all. As a pantser, I would have to wait for the inspiration to write to hit me. It was a very chaotic schedule and looked very different every day.

Mi piace sempre conoscere un po' meglio gli autori: com'è una tua giornata tipo quando sei nel bel mezzo della stesura di un romanzo?

Al momento sto vivendo il blocco dello scrittore più lungo del mondo, quindi non sto scrivendo. Quando scrivevo, dovevo sempre incastrare il lavoro a tempo pieno e gli impegni con la famiglia e gli amici. Alcuni giorni scrivevo una o due frasi, altri riuscivo a scrivere diecimila parole (un libro di 80.000 parole è stato scritto in un mese!) e altri ancora non scrivevo affatto. Essendo una scrittrice “pantser”, dovevo aspettare che l'ispirazione mi colpisse. Era un programma molto caotico e ogni giorno era molto diverso dall'altro.

Can you give us a little sneak peek into what you're currently working on?

As I said above, nothing at the moment. I have ideas for stories and characters but none of them are currently pushy enough to make me write them.

Puoi darci qualche anticipazione su ciò a cui stai lavorando attualmente?

Come ho detto sopra, al momento nulla. Ho idee per storie e personaggi, ma nessuna di esse è abbastanza convincente da spingermi a scriverle.

I have a traditional closing question for interviews and no one can escape it: what is your favorite book?

Oh dear, I couldn’t whittle it down to one. LOL I’m more of a favourite author person, so here’s some favourite books from my favourite authors.
