Mini Intervista ad Anyta Sunday

How did you start writing and what led you to choose the MM romance genre?

Since a child I’ve always been into writing stories and went into life with the absurd belief that one day I’d be an author. Pretty sure everyone thought it was a phase, something I’d grow out of, but . . . turns out I’m a stubborn dreamer! I kept at it. My first books will never see the light of day, but each one of them taught me more about the process of writing, and slowly I developed further. I chose the MM romance genre because I started writing a side character in another novel that was gay and I wanted to make sure I was doing right by his character. I went online to a lovely community of gay authors who helped me with my questions, and there I meet so many amazing people that I was inspired to write more gay love stories.

Come hai iniziato a scrivere e cosa ti ha portato a scegliere il genere romantico MM?

Fin da bambina mi è sempre piaciuto scrivere storie e ho affrontato la vita con l'assurda convinzione che un giorno sarei diventata un'autrice. Sono abbastanza sicura che tutti pensassero che fosse solo una fase, qualcosa che avrei superato crescendo, ma... a quanto pare sono una sognatrice testarda! Ho continuato a provarci. I miei primi libri non vedranno mai la luce, ma ognuno di essi mi ha insegnato qualcosa in più sul processo di scrittura e pian piano ho continuato a migliorare. Ho scelto il genere romantico MM perché ho iniziato a scrivere un personaggio secondario in un altro romanzo che era gay e volevo essere sicura di renderlo nel modo giusto. Sono entrata in una bellissima community online di autori gay che mi hanno aiutato con le mie domande e lì ho incontrato così tante persone fantastiche che mi hanno ispirato a scrivere altre storie d'amore gay.

Given the series of retellings about her, I assume Jane Austen is a writer you love. Would you say she inspired you in your writing? Which other authors do you think have influenced your narrative style?

How many times I’ve read, listened to, or watched a Jane Austen story! The BBC Pride and Prejudice was a traditional, yearly viewing for me, and so crafting up modern, gay retellings was a dream for me.

So many authors and books have inspired me! I loved Anne of Green Gables as a kid and also Sara Douglas’s Axis Trilogy and John Marsden’s Tomorrow, When The War Began series. Books transported me, offered emotions, and it was emotion that I’ve always tried to harness. To capture. To give back to my readers.

I libri mi trasportavano, mi regalavano emozioni, ed è proprio l'emozione che ho sempre cercato di sfruttare. Di catturare. Di restituire ai miei lettori.

The theme of personal growth and self-discovery often recurs in your novels. Do you think this stems, at least in part, from your own personal experiences?

I’m a firm believer in a growth mindset. I believe failure is a fundamental part of developing and learning, and we shouldn’t be afraid of it. We learn through mistakes and we’ll only ever reach our potential if we accept there will be a lot of tumbles on the journey. Pick up, keep going. Sometimes channelling that into a character is a healthy reminder that we are all human and can always improve ourselves.

Pensi che questo derivi, almeno in parte, dalle tue esperienze personali?

Credo fermamente nella mentalità orientata alla crescita. Ritengo che il fallimento sia una parte fondamentale dello sviluppo e dell'apprendimento e che non dovremmo averne paura. Impariamo dagli errori e potremo raggiungere il nostro potenziale solo se accettiamo che ci saranno molte cadute lungo il percorso. Rialzati e vai avanti. A volte, trasferire questo concetto in un personaggio è un modo salutare per ricordarci che siamo tutti esseri umani e che possiamo sempre migliorare noi stessi.

Are you influenced by dialogue with the LGBTQ+ community in the creation of your characters and stories?

Love is love no matter the gender pairing, I’ve always held this belief, and I want to show those romance stories, how achingly real and beautiful they can be. I tend to feel a character and let them dictate to me what their true desires are, and through the needs and inner needs, I go about creating their stories.

Is there a genre or subgenre that you haven't explored yet but would like to tackle?

Well, I recently just did that! I’ve always fancied writing romantasy, an epic, sprawling, sloooow burn romance. So I spent 2.5 years writing the six books of The King’s Man. It was a huge goal for me to tackle with many ups and downs along the way, but I’m pleased with the result. Slowest burn I’ve written to date, around 350k of journeying to get there. Writing more epic romantasies would be a dream.

Beh, l'ho appena fatto! Ho sempre desiderato scrivere un romanzo romantico-fantastico, una storia d'amore epica, articolata e dal ritmo lento. At Casa Sterne, we also love to get to know the authors. Who is Anyta beyond her writing?

A cat lover. A food enthusiast. I don’t have a car, so I walk everywhere and I love breathing in nature. My son gets up at 5 a.m., which means so do I. I greet the dawn, and I start the morning with my husband doing word puzzles. I take on the challenge of being a mother to both a teenager and a child with additional needs. I write scenes, I delete scenes, I cry over scenes, I despair that I am the worst author in the world, then I laugh and try again. I am a complete introvert, like my husband, who still has not confessed to our local café that his name is not Mike. After four years! At this point, I just call him Mike too. It is easier. I do dishes that never end. And I drag a sore, aching body to bed each night. Lol. That’s me. Exciting stuff.

A Casa Sterne, ci piace anche conoscere gli autori. Chi è Anyta al di là dei suoi scritti?

Un'amante dei gatti. Un'appassionata di cucina. Non ho la macchina, quindi vado ovunque a piedi e adoro respirare la natura. Mio figlio si alza alle 5 del mattino, quindi anch'io. Saluto l'alba e inizio la giornata con mio marito facendo cruciverba. Affronto la sfida di essere madre sia di un adolescente che di un bambino con bisogni speciali. Scrivo scene, cancello scene, piango sulle scene, mi dispero perché penso di essere la peggiore autrice del mondo, poi rido e riprovo. Sono completamente introversa, come mio marito, che ancora non ha confessato al nostro bar locale che il suo nome non è Mike. Dopo quattro anni! A questo punto, lo chiamo anch'io Mike. È più facile. Lavo piatti che non finiscono mai. E ogni sera trascino il mio corpo dolorante e affaticato a letto. Lol. Questa sono io. Roba eccitante.

Speaking of readers, how would you describe your relationship with them, and what kind of feedback excites you the most?

Readers are amazing! Some of the kindest people I’ve met, and they really treasure my characters as much as I do, it’s so touching and I’m so grateful! It’s motivating when someone reaches out and sends a few words that they loved something. It makes me happy if my stories can bring other’s a smile or a laugh or a cathartic cry.

I lettori sono fantastici! Sono tra le persone più gentili che abbia mai incontrato e amano i miei personaggi tanto quanto me, è davvero commovente e ne sono molto grata! È motivante quando qualcuno mi scrive per dirmi che ha apprezzato qualcosa. Mi rende felice se le mie storie riescono a strappare un sorriso, una risata o un pianto catartico agli altri.

Too many amazing books to choose. Reading Anne of Green Gables made me realize I wanted to write stories, so I’d have to say that ultimately is the most influential. Thank you so much for the interview!
