Tavia Lark writes MM fantasy romance about sad magic boys falling in love. Her favorite tropes include hurt/comfort, only one bed, and emotionally significant jackets. Like a vampire, Tavia enjoys long walks at night to avoid the sun’s baleful gaze.

What inspired you to become an M/M fantasy romance writer?

I’ve always been a fantasy reader, and I’ve loved MM fanfiction for a long time. Combining those elements turned into the genre of my heart.

What is the most difficult and the most rewarding part of writing fantasy romance?

Most difficult is balancing all the plot and relationship developments, so the pacing stays fast and enjoyable. Most rewarding is getting to know my characters. That would be the same in any genre, I suppose, but fantasy worlds let me put them in so many fun situations.

Qual è la parte più difficile e quella più gratificante dello scrivere romanzi fantasy?

La cosa più difficile è bilanciare tutti gli sviluppi della trama e delle relazioni, in modo che il ritmo rimanga veloce e piacevole. La cosa più gratificante è conoscere i miei personaggi. Sarebbe la stessa cosa in qualsiasi genere, credo, ma i mondi fantasy mi permettono di metterli in tante situazioni divertenti.

Is there a character or couple from your books that you are particularly attached to? Why?

From the books currently in Italian, Corin from Prince and Pawn is a favorite. I like writing characters who aren’t traditionally strong or powerful.

La cosa più difficile è bilanciare tutti gli sviluppi della trama e delle relazioni, in modo che il ritmo rimanga veloce e piacevole.

If you could live in one of the worlds you've created, which one would you choose and why?

The world of Perilous Courts! I would love to talk to a fellcat.

Se potesse vivere in uno dei mondi che ha creato, quale sceglierebbe e perché?

Il mondo delle Corti Perigliose! Mi piacerebbe parlare con un felino.

Is there any magical creature or fantasy element you haven't explored yet and would like to bring into your next books?

I would love to have unicorns and griffins in a future book! Also there are always new types of magical bonds to explore.

C'è qualche creatura magica o elemento fantasy che non hai ancora esplorato e che vorresti portare nei suoi prossimi libri?

Mi piacerebbe avere unicorni e grifoni in un libro futuro! Inoltre ci sono sempre nuovi tipi di legami magici da esplorare.

How important is it for you to voice and expand queer stories in the fantasy landscape?

It’s so important to have a variety of voices, perspectives, and stories in the genre. I prefer writing queernorm worlds, for example, but other kinds of stories should exist, too. So, I don’t think of myself as personally expanding the genre. It’s about every writer who wants to contribute, whether they’ve published already or not.

Quanto è importante per lei dare voce ed espandere le storie queer nel panorama fantasy?

È così importante avere una varietà di voci, prospettive e storie nel genere. Io preferisco scrivere mondi queernorm, per esempio,

ma dovrebbero esistere anche altri tipi di storie. Quindi, non penso a me stessa come a un'espansione personale del genere.

Have you ever received messages from readers who felt represented by your characters? If yes, what was the most significant feedback you received?

Yes — I’ve received many heartfelt messages from readers who felt represented. One reader said they wished my books were around when they were growing up.

Sì, ho ricevuto molti messaggi sinceri da lettori che si sono sentiti rappresentati. Una lettrice ha detto che avrebbe

voluto che i miei libri fossero esistiti quando stava crescendo.

Can you give us some anticipation about the fourth volume of ‘Perilous Courts’ since we are now on the third in Italy?

Book 4 is about a prince and bodyguard who are in complete denial about their obsessive cuddling! Unfortunately, my Italian publisher has not contracted books 4-6 yet. If you want to read the rest of the series in Italian, I suggest asking the publisher when they will be available!

Può darci qualche anticipazione sul quarto volume di 'Perilous Courts', visto che siamo al terzo in Italia?

Il quarto volume parla di un principe e di una guardia del corpo che negano completamente le loro coccole ossessive! Sfortunatamente, il mio editore italiano non ha ancora messo sotto contratto i libri 4-6. Se volete leggere il resto della serie in italiano, vi consiglio di chiedere all'editore quando saranno disponibili!

This is the hardest question! My favorite recent book is Heavenly Official’s Blessing by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu.
